A few years ago we celebrated reaching 6 billion humans, and now we are already half way past reaching 7 billion. By 2050 scientists have estimated we will reach the 9 billion mark. By 2100 I estimate that we will be around 12 billion.
Can the world sustain us if we keep going on like this without any drastic changes? I'm sure if we considered the total land mass area on our planet we have ample space for living, however keep in mind that not every land area is habitable, some are dry deserts and others are heavy forests and mountains. Even if we could reclaim all desert space and clear every forest to create living and farming space it still would not help us.
Clearing away forests mean destroying many important ecosystems not to mention that these forests make up for much of the oxygen, which we need, through photosynthesis. Even of the plankton and microorganisms in the ocean which also produce oxygen through photosynthesis of their own can support our requirements, what about food? All the sea life in the world isn't abundant enough to feed 12 billion people.
